Michael Behm

Michael Behm is an Associate Professor of Safety and Construction Sciences at Keene State College in New Hampshire. In 2025 he retired from East Carolina University as Professor and Director of the MS, Occupational Safety Program. Mike holds a PhD in Public Health from Oregon State University, an MS in Industrial Hygiene from Temple University (PA), and a BS in Occupational Safety and Hygiene Management from Millersville University (PA); he has been a Certified Safety Professional since 1995. He is a project-based Senior Consultant with Art of Work in Melbourne, Australia.

Mike was an active member of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Construction Sector Occupational Research and Prevention through Design Councils. He served on NIOSH's Board of Scientific Counselors for 3 years. Mike was awarded Research Fellowships with the Singapore National Parks Board, Centre for Urban Greenery and Ecology to study safe design aspects of urban greenery systems, and at RMIT University (Australia) focusing of safety through design in the built environment.

For 7 years (2012-2019) he served as Coordinator of the Working Commission on Safety and Health in Construction at the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction, based in Ottawa (CIB W099). In 2015, Mike was awarded a CIB commendation award as outstanding coordinator. Mike worked part-time for CIB as Programme Director for a little over 3 years (2019-2022).

Mike’s industrial work experience includes ESH Administrator for Lenox China (1991 – 1994) and Corporate Safety and Health Specialist for Saint-Gobain Corporation (1994 – 2001).
