Study Tours

The Cohen Institute’s study tour program offers experiential learning through travel to significant sites in Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Each study tour typically includes pre-departure education (discussions, lectures, and readings), experiential learning abroad (museums, educational tours), cultural experiences (engaging with food, art, and people), and opportunities to share aspects of the experience with local or state-wide audiences upon participants’ return home. The target audience for these trips includes educators, community members, elected officials, KSC alumni, faculty and staff, and others.

Spain: Fascism, War, Memory, Lessons

July 10-17, 2027 | Spain

The Cohen Institute is pleased to announce our next study tour. During July 2027, we will travel to Spain for a trip on the theme of “Spain: Fascism, War, Memory, Lessons.” Through pre-departure educational sessions held on Zoom and in the course of our travels, we will learn about the relationship between the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and World War II, the process of militarization under Franco, the methods of social control during the dictatorship (1939-1975), and the ways in which Spaniards have dealt with the traumatic memories of political repression and social fragmentation. Historical lectures and tours will be paired with cultural activities and visits to other significant memory sites in Madrid and Barcelona. The target audience for this trip is educators, community members, elected officials, alumni, and KSC faculty and staff.

The cost of this year’s program is $3,140 for double occupancy accommodations or $3,795 for private (single occupancy) accommodations. Please note that the Cohen Institute and our travel partners cannot assign shared rooms; you must identify your own travel partner for the double occupancy rate.

The program fee for this itinerary includes centrally-located hotel accommodations with breakfast included, ground transportation in Europe (high speed rail between cities, travel by metro within the city, and more), and group activities (such as visits to museums, walking tours, a cooking class, and more). The group will also be led by a content expert, Dr. Lisa DiGiovanni, and accompanied by a travel director who will support with logistics during travel. Travelers must arrange their own international flights to/from Spain, purchase required travel insurance, and cover all other costs not included in the trip package (any meals not covered in the itinerary, gratuity for our program director, airport transfers, etc.).

Please email coheninstitute@keene.edu if you would like to learn more about this study tour. Enrollment will be open soon! Spaces are limited and your enrollment is not confirmed until you have formally enrolled and paid the non-refundable deposit of $100.

A limited number of partial scholarships are available to educators and other people who have ideas for how their participation in the trip might be shared in high-impact ways with their schools and/or communities. Please email coheninstitute@keene.edu if you are interested in learning more about funding.
