March Carroll House Encaustic Art 2 exhibit

Carroll House - Art Gallery
Thursday, · -

The exhibit features three New England Artists working in the encaustic painting medium, Marsha Hewitt (former Professor at Keene State College), Earl Schofield and Gregory Wright. Encaustic painting technique dates back over 2,000 years! The paint is made with powdered pigment combined with bees wax and Damar resin. The paint can only be applied after it is heated to a molten state. Once the paint cools, it hardens and can accept more paint layers or is finished. Historically, the best know examples of this technique in the Ancient World are the Fayum tomb portraits from Egypt. In more recent times, the American Artist, Jasper Johns made many of his paintings from the early 1960's with encaustic paint. This exhibit runs through April 30th. The Gallery is open Wed-Sat 12-5pm
