The Stories We Could Tell: Totalitarianism and Inhumanity in the Cambodian Genocide

Drawing on his role as an expert witness at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal in March 2016 and his extensive research in Cambodia, Professor Alex Hinton will explore the entanglement of totalitarianism and inhumanity in the Cambodian genocide. He will also discuss how we can speak out against these atrocities.

Speaker Bio: Alex Hinton is Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights at Rutgers University. He is the award-winning author or editor of seventeen books, including, most recently, It Can Happen Here: White Power and the Rising Threat of Genocide in the US (NYU, 2021), Anthropological Witness: Lessons from the Khmer Rouge Tribunal (Cornell, 2022), and Perpetrators: Encountering Humanity’s Dark Side (Stanford, 2023).

This event is part of the Noémi Ban Memorial Lecture Series at Western Washington University, and it is co-sponsored by the Cohen Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies as well as other organizations and centers across the country.
