The Sidore Lecture Series Presents: Matthew Hipps “The Paradox of Our Democracy”

Virtual
Tuesday, · -

The paradox of democracy will explore how a constitutional system that was ostensibly set up to perpetuate the ideals laid out in the Declaration of Independence (life, liberty, equality) were undone by the very theoretical and foundational underpinnings of the founders. How does a system that offers that "all men are created equal" create systems that are inherently unequal?

Through an examination of American exceptionalism, individualism, and the American Dream, we will explore how the Constitution creates a framework for undermining both liberty and justice. We will conclude with a discussion of how we can better utilize the theoretical foundations of our nation to truly build a nation where there is "liberty and justice for all."
