KSC Seminar Series: Nip slips, Upskirts, and Wardrobe Malfunctions: The Framing of Nonconsensual Pornography as Scandalous Celebrity Bodies
Presented by Dr. Amber Davisson: The phrase “wardrobe malfunction” emerged after the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show when Justin Timberlake removed Janet Jackson’s shirt and bared her nipple to 140 million television viewers for less than a second. Today the phrase is often used to describe paparazzi upskirt shots and images of celebrity nip slips. When female celebrity bodies are revealed in public, it is a scandal. Professor Davisson’s presentation details the history of the wardrobe malfunction and asks: Why are bare breasts humiliating? And what should media consumers do with nonconsensual pornography delivered to us under the guise of entertainment and schadenfreude?
