All students enrolled full time at KSC are eligible to work on campus, either under the Federal Work Study Program or under KSC’s Student Hourly Program. The Federal Work Study Program is financed by both federal and institutional funds. Please remember that even if you are eligible for work study you are not guaranteed a job on campus. We post a list of currently available employment opportunities, but there is a limited number of positions available. Also remember that if you do receive a work-study job, you will receive a check for your wages, and it’s your responsibility to apply that money towards your academic expenses. The College does not automatically apply your wages towards your tuition or any other KSC fees.
Current On-Campus Employment
On-campus positions are available to students who are eligible for Federal Work-Study (FWS) or Student Hourly (SH). Eligibility for FWS is reflected in your financial aid package. Students who are not eligible for FWS are likely eligible to participate in our Student Hourly employment program. Note the information above regarding the availability of positions and your responsibility for your wages.
If you are considering a position that is exclusive to FWS eligible students, please verify that a FWS award was included in your financial aid package before applying.
The Federal Work Study Program is financed by both federal and institutional funds. If you receive a Work Study award, it means that you are eligible to be paid for work from an individual department’s Work Study Budget; it is not a guarantee of employment. Because employment is voluntary and limited, these funds are never deducted from your billing statement; you receive a pay check for your work, and it is up to you to put that money towards your college expenses.
If you are eligible to participate in the Federal Work Study Program, you will see a Work Study award on the Financial Aid Award Letter you receive from the Financial Aid Office. To be considered for the award, you must complete a FAFSA by the March 1 priority filing deadline, indicate an interest in Work Study on the FAFSA, and demonstrate financial need as defined by federal policy.
- Students who receive and accept a Work Study award are not guaranteed an on-campus position.
- Work Study authorizations are emailed to eligible students from the Financial Aid Office once a year and must be presented to employers to secure employment.
- Students are paid every two weeks and are expected to budget these earnings for educational expenses. Pay rates are set by the College and vary based on job titles, required skills, responsibilities, and the employee’s qualifications and experience. The general pay range is $8-$15 per hour.
- The Work Study total on the award Letter represents an earning limit. Students are encouraged to monitor earnings to ensure they do not exceed this limit. Earnings in excess of this limit may need to be repaid.
- Typical jobs are found in the library, department offices, gymnasium, student center, and residence halls, in positions such as student assistant, library assistant, grounds crew, lifeguard, residence night attendant, and intramural activities assistant. See Handshake for job listings and to apply.
- Funds from the Work Study Program enable eligible students to work an average of 10 hours per week each semester while classes are in session. The number of hours a student may work per week depends on their award and the rate of pay they receive for their work.
Students who are not eligible for a Federal Work Study Award are still eligible to work on campus under KSC’s Student Hourly Program. The College provides complete financial support to the Student Hourly Program, and the Financial Aid Office administers it.
Jobs are posted online, labeled as “SH” for Student Hourly. Students are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week depending on the department’s needs. Students are paid every two weeks and are expected to budget these earnings for education expenses.
Please Note:
- Students who are eligible for Federal Work Study, and therefore have the greatest financial need, are given priority in finding on-campus positions during the first two weeks of each semester.
- After the two-week priority period for Federal Work Study students has expired, a number of select on-campus jobs become available to the rest of our full-time, matriculated students and are noted as Student Hourly (SH) eligible on the online jobs database, Handshake.
