Chemistry: Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Are you curious about the natural world?  Chemistry is not only central to our existence, but it also provides insight into how we interact with the world around us.  So, it is no surprise that mastering chemistry is essential to anyone aspiring to a career in the sciences.  At Keene State College, students form strong bonds with the faculty who are committed to teaching excellence and student success.

Majors

From introductory through advanced courses, students receive hands-on training and have access to state-of-the-art instrumentation housed within the Putnam Science Center.

While at Keene State College, immerse yourself in exciting research that has the potential to make a real difference in society.  As early as their first year, students begin working alongside faculty on original research projects in developing environmentally friendly chemical processes, organometallic catalysis, the design and construction of scientific instrumentation, and more.  Combined, these experiences help launch student career pathways.

Chemistry majors are eligible to be part of the STEPS Program that supports students with scholarships, research opportunities, and academic and professional development. If you have the passion to explore, the world is yours.

BS in Chemistry

An option of the Chemistry BS is accredited by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society (ACS).  Students work with their advisor to plan and complete the necessary requirements.  Completion of this program leads to a BS in Chemistry with American Chemical Society Certification.

BA in Chemistry

The BA in Chemistry has been designed for students interested in careers in areas that use chemistry as a base, such as the health-related professions, pharmaceutical marketing, forensics, education, and other chemistry-related fields.

The BA offers the flexibility of combining the chemistry major with complimentary major or minor from a different discipline

Chemistry Minor

The Chemistry minor makes it possible for students to pursue their personal interests by selecting upper-level electives in Chemistry alongside their chosen major. Tuck some technical chemistry knowledge in your back pocket to really impress future employers.

Find Your Potential

Mastering chemistry creates tomorrow’s problem-solvers and plays a role in understanding today’s complex global issues.  While at Keene State College, students discover, investigate, and learn science through their coursework and engaging in internships and original research.  You can be one of the 57% of students that get into research starting even in the first year.

What Our Chemistry Alums Are Saying

"The hands-on problem-solving skills acquired through chemistry research are transferrable to virtually any position students should choose to pursue after completing their undergraduate degree."
- James Ulcickas, 2015

"The research experience I had helped prepare me for working in a graduate lab.  I was able to work on troubleshooting for experiments that don’t provide expected results and good notebook skills.  Undergraduate research experience also helped bridge the transition from undergraduate to graduate school."
- Jessica Vandervord, 2018

"Undergraduate research allows for you to test your knowledge, perfect those techniques, and collaborate with other students and professors all of which I consistently use in the chemical industry."
- Christina Connor, 2017
