Transnational Modernism (ENG-495)

In the first part of the sequence, we looked to both canonical and marginalized authors from around the world to consider how they represent, rethink, and disregard European and American models of modernist aesthetics. This semester, in the second course of the sequence (495), we will consider Anglophone modernism's legacy for contemporary cosmopolitan writers from around the globe, from Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart-an allusion to W.B. Yeats's poem "The Second Coming"-to Zadie Smith's revision of E.M. Forster's novel Howard's End in On Beauty. Prerequisites: ITW 101, ENG 215, ENG 315, 60 credits, ENG 395.
