From the IT Group: Welcome Back!

From the IT Group:

Welcome back to a new academic year. While some of you were away for the summer, the IT Group worked hard on campus technology to make improvements, new enhancements and refresh already existing technologies to help ensure a successful academic year for you.

Like every summer, all of the campus public and specialized computer labs were reimaged and refreshed, while others were upgraded with new computers and/or software. Seven new media enhanced classrooms (MECs) were installed in Morrison, Parker and Rhodes Hall. These new rooms contain “Smart carts” with DVD/VHS players, PCs, audio systems, network connections for both internal PCs and laptops, and Extron controllers. Each is connected to its own Data Projector. Also, Elliot 229 was redesigned as a multi-functional space that is flexible and easily reconfigured for use by different campus training groups. The new ITG Learning Center accommodates individuals and groups, self paced hands-on computer training, instructor led training, and video conferencing. Installed is an Eno (Smart) board, instructor’s station with a PC, data projector, laptop cabinet with 16 wireless laptops, and video conferencing equipment including multiple cameras and video displays. To schedule this space for your next training or video conference, please complete the request form and you will be contacted.

We enhanced the security of the KSC network through the expansion of the Safe Connect network access control product to all users on campus. Safe Connect is a network validation software package used to protect your information, intellectual property and KSC resources. The system authenticates the user and scans his or her machine for the required virus software and security patches. The result is a more secure, reliable and predictable IT network infrastructure. Students have used this same product for over a year with great success.

We’ve also introduced a Smartphone syncing service that allows you to do over-the-air syncing with your iPhone or Blackberry and your KSC e-mail, calendar and contacts.

We are also pleased to announce that Rob Coleman accepted the IT HelpDesk Support Technician position in June. Rob is a 2010 KSC alum who worked for the HelpDesk as a student technician for 3 years demonstrating excellent customer service and technical skills. Rob will continue the HelpDesk mission to provide excellent customer service and support to campus. Please join us in welcoming Rob to KSC, and feel free to stop by and say hello.
