Education, Programs, and Services

Crime awareness is the key to crime prevention. Individuals must assume responsibility for their own safety and the security of their belongings by taking simple common sense precautions. Vehicles and Residences should be kept locked at all times, and valuables should not be visible to those passing by. Community members are encouraged to report safety and security concerns, including suspicious persons or activity, as soon as possible. The Department of Campus Safety provides the following primary and ongoing services and programs to educate community members to promote safety and prevent victimization.

Campus Safety Services

Campus Safety provides a wide variety of services to the community.

Access Control and CCTV

Campus Safety manages access control to all campus facilities and has the ability to secure the majority of the campus within moments. Officers maintain access logs and monitor CCTV equipment to identify suspicious activity.

Many residence halls are also equipped with CCTV cameras both outside and inside in common areas for expanded security coverage.

Bicycle Safety & Registration

To help deter bicycle thefts and to aid in identifying lost or stolen bicycles, all members of the College community are encouraged to register their bikes. This can be done anytime at the Department of Campus Safety, Keddy House. There are several steps to take to protect yourself against bicycle theft:

  • Always lock your bicycle
  • Use a case-hardened steel chain with links at least 5/8” in diameter and a good strong padlock. Most bicycles stolen at Keene State are locked, but only with inexpensive chains or rubber bicycle locks, which can be cut with wire cutters. The Department of Campus Safety can supply you with a list of hardware stores in the area which sell effective bicycle locks
  • Lock the bike around the frame, through both wheels, and to a bike rack. When possible, keep the bike indoors
  • Check to see if your bike is covered under any insurance policies held by yourself or your parents. If not, get it insured

Blue Light Phones

Telephones installed around campus for emergency or other assistance.

Campus Alerts

Issued to advise the community of relevant information in other areas of concern, i.e. weather or storm advisories, traffic advisories, potential or real power outages, etc.

Crime Alerts/Timely Warnings

Issued when a crime or pattern of crimes or other activity has occurred which present a serious, or ongoing threat to the Community. Alerts are sent out as a text and e-mail, are posted in those areas affected and notification is made to Community Living staff, if applicable. Alerts may also activate the College’s ENS.

Emergency Handbook

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and Campus Safety have prepared this emergency handbook to assist you in preventing, learning about, and dealing with emergencies.

Emergency Notification System

The Emergency Notification System sends emergency messages, including snow closings and weather alerts, to enrolled campus members via text message, cell phone, and/or e-mail when circumstances dictate. It will also be used when a situation exists that presents an imminent danger to the campus. An imminent danger is one that threatens the immediate safety of the campus community; is not anticipated, and failure to provide such a warning may result in serious harm. Sign up to be notified in an emergency.

Emergency Response

Safety and security issues are of utmost importance to Community Living staff members. All staff undergo a thorough training program relative to developmental needs of students, security policies, policy enforcement, and issues related to overall safety.

A Community Living on-call schedule exists 24 hours a day. In addition to routine campus security, a Campus Safety Officer performs regular evening and late night rounds through the residential environments. All residence hall entrance doors are locked 24 hours a day. Individual room doors should be locked whether the room is occupied or unoccupied. Keys and combinations should be kept secure and not shared with others.

Students are expected to carry their identification cards with them at all times, as they must produce their KSC ID on request. Both on and off campus visitors must be escorted through the residence hall area by a student host. Overnight guests in a given room must be registered by completing an overnight guest pass.
