Residential Life

Living/Learning Communities

Buddhist Minds:
The purpose of the Buddhist Minds Community is to provide the students of Keene State College with an opportunity for philosophical exploration, spiritual introspection and personal enlightenment. We are advocates of diverse ways of thinking and will be hosting a variety of intellectually stimulating events ranging from group meditation, Zen arts and crafts to coffee talks and community service. People of diverse backgrounds are more than welcome and anyone who feels that their presence would have a benevolent impact on our community is encouraged to apply.

Circle K (Community Service):
This Living and Learning Community concept is to enhance our students' awareness of how they can contribute to the Keene community. Goals include getting more students involved in campus and community service activities, especially the incoming freshman, providing opportunities for fellowship, personal growth, and leadership skills and the development of positive role models for the campus community.

Culinary Creations:
Members of this community will collaborate with other campus groups to host a series of healthy meals each semester (open to other students living on campus) with the goal of educating students about healthy, inexpensive meals that they can prepare in the residence halls. Students in the community will benefit from living in a collaborative environment while enhancing current community service initiatives.

Education in Art:

Environmental Living/Outdoor Adventure:
The Environmental Living/Learning Community includes exploring the outdoors and helping the environment. This community would be looking to do things anywhere from hiking Mt. Monadnock to organizing trash pick-up days. Hopefully we would be able to enjoy the outdoors and help protect/preserve the environment.

General Science Experience:
We are looking for people who are interested in the sciences weather that is your major or just have a strong interest. This is to reach out to all science fields to create a place where creative ideas and expression of education can be freely exchanged. The idea of this would be to allow anyone interested in science to express their expertise and creativity in any science field. This is a place that people of different science backgrounds can share and express their interests. This is where the geologist talks to the astronomer about the makeup of a planet. Where the botanist talks to the biologist about the first form of life on the planet. The idea of this community is to spread the understanding and knowledge of different students with different scientific backgrounds that come together to educate and explore new fields that none could do before.

GLBT Educators and Advocates:
The community would be available for any gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender students and any supporters. Our goals include creating a safe and tolerant environment where students can enjoy the residential life without worrying about harassment. This group would focus on academics and GLBT education. We are determined to raise GLBT awareness, tolerance, and primarily education.

Honors:
The honors program is designed to provide intellectual stimulation and challenges to better ourselves academically, personally, and professionally. We will take specifically designed courses, study abroad, and engage in multiple community service projects. Living together will further enforce our desire to succeed and give each other support and guidance throughout our academically challenging classes and projects.

Leadership Community:
Leadership community is focused on fostering leadership in individuals and encouraging individuals to take leadership roles on campus. These roles could be small, such as running an event, or large, such as joining a club e-board or student government. As an LLC we are dedicated to providing resources and advice concerning leadership and living in the greater LLC community of Pondside 3. We look forward to having many new applicants for the Fall 2008 year.

The Music House:
We provide a common place for music majors to come together and express ourselves both through music and common ground. Three primary goals are: 1. To reach out to people outside of the music department, and involve them in music. 2. To form a close bond with other music majors for knowledge in academic areas as well as to feed off of other musical influences. 3. To host both music and non-music related socials to include the rest of the Keene State community.

Power of Ten:
Our community will provide new learning experiences for other students. We will promote service in the community though our leadership skills, and will challenge others to meet our standards. We will teach others through our actions of service in the community by setting the best example possible and being an inspiration to all.

Resources for Educators:
Teaching and learning occur in more places than just the classroom. In our community we will explore a variety of these resources including museums, films, libraries, and trade books. We will support each other in learning how to apply what we find to our current classes and for our future students. Field trips, movie nights, curriculum kit and book purchases, lesson planning roundtables, guest speakers, supportive conversations, etc - come join other students interested in teaching!

Seeing Things Whole:
The Geography LLC seeks to imbed in its members and the broader KSC community the concepts of responsible stewardship of Earth and geographic and landscape/spatial awareness. Sustainability and the goal of reducing our ecological footprint guide our thinking and purpose. We will engage our community via field trips, community service, and a host of campus-based activities.

Social Justice:
The Social Justice Community will work to bring issues that affect the quality of life for people living in our world to public consciousness and work to find solutions to these problems. By taking action in small ways, the Social Justice Community will work to make a difference in the society we live in.

The Ability Awareness Group:
The Ability Awareness Group is designed to be an exemplar of inclusive environments for students with disabilities. The TAG students are committed to learning and educating others about the transition of students with disabilities from high school to college. The TAGs will participate in group discussions and journal writing about their experience of living in an accessible and supportive environment. They will also be available to share what they learned with others on campus.

Through the Lens: KSC Film Studies Community:
The Film community will provide students with an opportunity to live, work, and learn with other students sharing the same passions. The students will organize workshops, host guest speakers, and hold film screenings and discussions open to the entire campus. The students will gain priceless experience and find their own strengths, while sharing their own wisdom and knowledge with their fellow students.

Wellness Living:
Join the Wellness Community and promote healthy choices at KSC. Through this Living and Learning experience, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about a variety of health and wellness topics and meet other students who are interested in making healthy choices regarding alcohol and other drugs, nutrition, fitness, stress management, sexual health, and much more. You’ll also receive training to become a Nationally Certified Peer Educator.
