Iconic Douglas Fir to Come Down

From Bud Winsor, Physical Plant/Grounds:

Sadly, one of the iconic trees on campus is failing badly and may become a hazardous tree, if not dealt with soon. The Douglas fir between the gym and the art gallery is showing signs of stress, from which it will not recover. This has been confirmed by Campus Arborist Noah Washburn and is also the opinion of Bartlett Tree Arborist Frank Grano.

This Douglas fir was the campus holiday tree and was the scene of many campus celebrations, when Dr. Y. would switch on the heavily lighted tree with much fanfare. Great memories, and I would never suggest this fate for the tree, unless it was absolutely necessary.

It is our hope to remove the tree before students return on August 26. A suitable, compatible replacement will be chosen this fall.
