Professional Activities

Professors Brian Green, Peggy Walsh, and Leigh Corrette participated in the New England Sociological Association conference, “Poverty & Inequalities: Implications, Policies and New Perspectives,” at the University of New Hampshire on Saturday, November 6. Faculty were accompanied by nine sociology honors students: Jackie Vanacore, Lauren Charamut, Jeanine Tappan, Lee Ann Clark, Katelyn Deetz, Amanda Coffey, Sara Gallagher, Tyler Rines, and Emma Pantesco. Senior Tyler Rines presented a paper on “New York City and Chicago in Review: Dynamics of Urban Poverty.” His mentor for this project was his Social Problems instructor, Leigh Corrette. In a session on pedagogy, Peggy Walsh presented ideas for using Google mapping tools to increase the visibility of social programs in walking distance to campus. Students thank the KSC Student Conference Fund and Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Honor Society for Sociologists for generous support.

“Making the Most of 2,700 Minutes” by Margaret Walsh was published in the October 2010 issue of The Teaching Professor. The article includes ideas for increasing student traffic during regularly scheduled office hours, and other ways to create a supportive atmosphere for student learning outside of class time.
