Trombly receives Julia McHale Redfern Award

Alex Trombly is this year’s recipient of The Julia McHale Redfern Award. Alex is a junior in the Theatre & Dance department with a concentration in Design/Technical Theatre. The Redfern award is given annually to “an outstanding student in the performing arts.” Dr. Leo Redfern, president of KSC 1969-79, created the award in honor of his mother.
Alex’s level of commitment and involvement in the Theatre & Dance department has been outstanding. Since arriving at Keene State, he has worked as sound designer and sound engineer, in set construction, puppet construction, video technician, master electrician.
In the last two years, Alex has served as assistant technical director, a unique independent study course only offered to the top design/technology students. Alex has distinguished himself through his dedication and was awarded Keene State College Student Worker of the Year in 2009. Alex’s great organizational skills and dedication to his craft on _The Matchmaker _played a part in the crew being awarded the Golden Hammer Award for excellence in technical theater at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival region I.
This year Alex was granted the challenging position of Technical Director, supervised by Craig Lindsay (Theatre & Dance Technical Director) for A Lie of the Mind. In this capacity Alex faithfully brought the set design to life onstage. The set, designed by faculty member Céline Perron, was comprised of four detailed locations that sat on two revolves. Alex drafted all of the scenic elements for the build. He had to know that the show would be on budget, and plan and monitor progress in the shop. Alex has been an effective leader of his fellow students, and oversaw student crews in the construction and load-in of the set on the Redfern Arts Center Main stage.
Alex is also involved outside Keene State College. He often volunteers at his local high school in Swanzey and also works for MoCo as Technical Director.
