Lecturer in English Jeff Friedman was selected for the first Keene State College Adjunct Excellence in Teaching Award, for 2014–15, which includes a cash award of $1,000. English Department Chair Kirsti Sandy nominated him and detailed the depth and breadth of his commitment and dedication and his efforts and work in and out of the classroom—as a teacher, advisor, and mentor—to promote student success, raise standards of achievement, and increase student learning.

“I’m deeply honored to be the first adjunct selected for this award—as there are so many accomplished adjuncts who are terrific teachers and who have had a tremendous impact on the students,” Professor Friedman said.

Professor Friedman teaches creative writing, and his courses are known for integrating imaginative approaches to learning. His classes include such innovative courses as Cooking, Eating, and Dreaming; Walking and Writing; Writing Your Own Book of Dreams; and Prose Poem/Mini Story. He is the author of six books of poetry (five published by Carnegie Mellon University Press), including Pretenders (2014), Working in Flour (2011), and Black Threads (2008). He is a recipient of the National Endowment Literature Fellowship for 2016.
