Keene State College Offers Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture

KEENE, N.H., 12/15/06 - The architecture program at Keene State College, formerly part of Technology Studies, is now a separate, stand-alone major with a revised curriculum and greatly enhanced design studio courses. Last spring, 23 seniors graduated from the program and more than 25 percent of them went directly into graduate school.

The program is a pre-professional four-year program designed to give students a solid foundation in the artistic, scientific, and technical aspects of architecture. The curriculum offers a range of courses in design studio, building science, sustainable design, history/theory, digital technology, and practice.

A core value of the program is to “learn by doing,” from engaging students in work with local organizations on design solutions to real architectural problems, including projects for affordable housing, community and cultural centers, and school buildings. Sustainable design is also a strong focus of the program.

All of the courses reflect a strong sensitivity to green architecture, solar energy, and sustainable design. Students particularly interested in sustainability can take a series of electives focusing on energy, sustainable practices, and building science.

“Graduates will be prepared for graduate programs and professional careers, but will also be well educated in fundamental principles in the arts and sciences,” says Peter Temple, associate professor of architecture. “In this way, they can adapt and evolve their career paths to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world.”
