Keene State Offers Short Courses in May

KEENE, N.H. 5/4/06 - Keene State College’s Continuing Education and Extended Studies offers short credit and noncredit courses in May on various topics.

Environmentally Friendly Gardening (NCPP-290-N14C), running May 15 & 22, 5:30-9:30 p.m., focuses on keeping plants healthy, placing plants where they will grow, and fertilizing. The goal is to provide information and ideas to help with any type of gardening, from the small flower bed to major gardens. This noncredit course costs $125 and includes costs of plants.

Computer-free Digital Photography (NCPP-290-N7C), May 16 & 23, 6-9 p.m., is for anyone wanting to take better digital images. In the first class, students become better acquainted with their digital camera. In the second class, students work on printing pictures directly from memory cards. Help is given with specific problems and student work is used for illustrating topics. Students should bring their camera and manual to the first class and be familiar with the manual. A $10 materials fee, payable to the instructor, is due at the first class. The cost is $100 for this noncredit course.

Yoga for Families (NCPP-290-N8C), May 16 & 30, 6-8 p.m., both days, introduces yoga to parents and elementary school aged children who have not practiced it before. Parents and children are actively engaged with each other, taking part in yoga games and group activities such as Shape Museum and Yoga Bowling. Parents and children should wear comfortable clothing allowing for free movement. Students are asked to bring plenty of water for drinking and a mat, towel, or blanket. The noncredit course costs $30 per adult and $15 per child.

Basics of Digital Imagery (ART-199-W1C), May 19 & 20, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., is a hands-on course for people interested in learning digital image management basics. Included is an introduction to the digital darkroom, tools used to work with digital images, image editing techniques, manipulation of traditional film images, and output of digital cameras. Resolution and other factors to consider when preparing images for e-mail, websites, and photo printing are discussed. The course is taught on a PC platform using Adobe Photoshop. Students should bring at least two photographs for scanning to the first class. The Friday session is conducted entirely online; reliable internet access and a Blackboard account are required. The course is one credit.

In Microsoft Office (CS-110-W1C), May 19 & 20, 5-9:30 p.m. & 8 a.m.-6 p.m., students receive an overview of each Microsoft application in the integrated package: Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheet), Access (database), and PowerPoint (presentation software), and learn basics of linking information between them. Students should have basic knowledge of Windows and bring a 3.5” diskette to class. The course is one credit.

In Scones and Tea (NCPP-290-N6C), May 21, 1-3:30 p.m., participants learn to create scones from both a yeast-raised and quick bread baking method before indulging in sweet and savory scones while enjoying a traditional tea. The course is taught by a registered dietician. A $9 lab fee, payable to the instructor, is due at the start of class. The cost for this noncredit course is $40.

Simplified T’ai Chi (NCWP-290-N1C), Fridays, May 19 - June 23, 6-8 p.m., is taught in the traditional style and covers the first half of the form. Students gain an understanding of the connection between T’ai Chi and its Taoist roots. The cost is $200 for this noncredit course.

Beyond Blame & Criticism: Techniques for Nonviolent Communication (NCPP-290-N3C), Wednesdays, May 31-June 21, 6:30-8:30 p.m., examines use of language and ways of expressing ourselves to promote connection and understanding. Students analyze defensiveness and hostility, and experience how listening for feelings and needs create joy and connection. Practice is the mainstay of this noncredit course costing $125.
