The Power of Children, Jeanne White-Ginder, and AIDS Activism
Talk by Jeanne White-Ginder and display of Ryan White's panel from the AIDS Memorial Quilt. As a teenager in the 1980s, Ryan White contracted AIDS through medication for his hemophilia and was expelled from school due to his condition. Shortly after his death, the U.S. Congress passed the Ryan White Care Act, which established major public health programs that still help people living with HIV/AIDS today. Ryan White’s mom, Jeanne, will speak about her son’s legacy and AIDS awareness. From October 3 to December 3, 2016, the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery will also have a gallery exhibition of "Why We Fight: Remembering AIDS Activism," which is a New York Public Library photo archive of materials from key New York City organizations and individuals who were pivotal in the fight against AIDS.
