Sustainability in Developing Countries: A Case Study from Nepal

Similar to many developing countries, Nepal faces serious economic, social, and environmental problems. Seemingly insurmountable problems include severe air pollution, water pollution and scarcity, and waste management problems associated with rapidly expanding urban areas in the Kathmandu valley as well as deforestation, great poverty and health issues. The interconnection of these problems requires a whole system approach to find sustainable solutions. The lecture will highlight some of the initiatives and practices of the Kevin Rohan Memorial Eco Foundation (KRMEF), a successful sustainable community near the Kathmandu valley.

Dr. Renate Gebauer is the chair of the Environmental Studies Department. With a background in ecosystems ecology, she is interested in translating systems thinking to questions of sustainability. Most recently she took a group of honors students to Nepal to explore sustainable approaches in a community near the Kathmandu valley.
