"Song for a Young Country -- A History of Choral Music in New Zealand from European Settlement to the Present Day" by Matthew Leese, Artist in Residency.
Choral singing is one of the most popular pastimes in New Zealand, with deeply-seated roots both in British Colonial traditions of Cathedral and College as well as in the traditional music of the indigenous Maori people and neighboring Pasifika cultures, (primarily Western Samoa, and Tonga).
This presentation will walk through the history of ‘Kiwi’ choral music making from the beginning of written history (early c.19) to the present day, featuring audio/visual examples and participatory exercises in both the Anglo and Traditional styles.
