Foundations for Sustainability at KSC

In addition to the College’s mission statement, the foundations of sustainability at Keene State are firmly embedded in our current strategic plan and our academic and co-curricular plan:

Strategic Plan, especially Goal 4.5

Promote a culture and instill and communicate policies and practices that value and support environmental sustainability and improve the quality of life locally and globally. One objective for this goal is achieving the Sustainability Rating of STARS GOLD by 2020—an ambitious, but achievable, goal if we all participate.

Learning Outcomes, especially:

  • Civic Engagement: Keene State College students will demonstrate knowledge of one or more social or environmental issues including relevant cultural, political and policy contexts; take action individually or collectively to address issues; and reflect on the ethical dimensions of civic engagement.
  • Commitment to Well-Being: Keene State College students will reflect critically on their own well-being and that of the larger world, demonstrate knowledge of issues that impact health and wellness, advocate for themselves, and commit to one or more practices that promote well-being.

Keene State College also is an active participant with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and its Sustainability Tracking and Assessment Rating System (STARS). Keene State College received a STARS Silver rating in 2014. As a 2007 signatory to the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), the College committed to climate change action planning and campus-wide carbon neutrality by mid-century.
