Filmmakers Perform Cutting Edge Live Cinema at Redfern Arts Center

Filmmakers Sam Green and Brent Green Perform Cutting Edge Live Cinema Featuring Drummer Brendan Canty at Redfern Arts Center

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sam Green and filmmaker-animator Brent Green join together for a cutting edge live cinema performance featuring drummer Brendan Canty of Fugazi fame, on Wednesday, November 4 at 7 p.m. at the Redfern Arts Center at Keene State College. These innovative artists present eight short cinematic gems that combine film, narration, and live music. Brendan Canty, who played with the 1980s and ‘90s hard core punk rock band Fugazi, and his brother James Canty (Ted Leo and the Pharmacists) provide a live “sound track” for the short films along with Foley artist Kaye Ryan providing sound effects. Brent Green, who narrates some of the films, joins the musicians on guitar during the performance.

Sam Green, a documentary filmmaker based in San Francisco and New York, narrates four of his short films: Fog, Rainbow Man 9/11, Last Person in the Phonebook, and Louis Armstrong. Brent Green, a self-taught animated filmmaker and artist from Cressona, PA, will show four of his short films: Carlin, EE (Find my f—-’ fingers), EE (Cherry trees and lightning) and Strange Fates.

Tickets to the live cinema performance are $20, $15 and $5 for KSC students. Sam Green has made many films including most recently The Measure of All Things and The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller, a live cinematic collaboration with the indie rock band Yo La Tengo. His documentary The Weather Underground was nominated for an Academy Award and included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial.

“These live performance films attempt to …weave together images and ideas and spoken words that will never be replicated exactly, a movie being born as you see and hear it, as alive as music,” writer Rebecca Solnit said about Sam Green’s live cinema.

Brent Green is a self-taught visual artist, filmmaker and storyteller. Green has been featured in Art in America, and his films have screened, often with live musical accompaniment, in film and art settings alike at venues such as the Sundance Film Festival, MoMA, The J. Paul Getty Musuem, The Walker Art Center, and The BostonMFA.

There are several free activities surrounding the live cinema performance, all of which take place on Wednesday, November 4.

• A Public Discussion on interdisciplinary art practice with Sam Green, Brent Green, and musicians Brendan Canty, James Canty, and Kaye Ryan takes place at 12 p.m. in the Alumni Recital Hall. Local writer, photographer, and art advocate Michelle Aldredge will moderate the discussion, which is free and open to the public.

• Class Visit: Brent Green speaks to KSC film students at 2 p.m.

• A post-show Meet and Greet and reception with the live cinema artists follows the performance in the Redfern lobby.
