Unlike the majority of incoming students, Kellie “Doc” Gordon already knows what her major will be when she arrives at Keene State College this fall. Despite a nickname that implies a career in medicine, Gordon intends to major in journalism.

“I enjoy taking pictures and writing, so I thought I’d combine them and major in journalism,” said Gordon, who grew up on a cattle farm in East Swanzey, NH, and graduated from Monadnock Regional High School.

Gordon, who got her nickname in middle school because of her desire to be a doctor, changed course after receiving a little point-and-shoot camera at the age of 12. Her hobby suddenly became a passion. Involved in a plethora of activities at Monadnock Regional, where she was a three-sport athlete, a member of the National Honor Society and French club, and on the staff of the school newspaper and yearbook, Gordon also found time to begin building an impressive journalism resume outside of school.

Gordon parlayed her love for photography into a job with Sports NH, a start-up web site that promotes local sports, and has spent the past two summers serving as the team photographer for the Keene Swamp Bats. “I’ve had a good start to my career,” said Gordon, who uses the watermark “Doc Gordon” on all her photos. “Not only have I done a lot of work, but I also met some great people who can help me with references.”

Gordon also got a leg up learning about the journalism program at Keene State after she attended a workshop on campus as a junior. “It was really cool. We got to see some of the things they do, like broadcasting and photography, and I also had a chance to write leads for different stories,” said Gordon, who is looking forwarding to working on the Equinox, the College’s award-winning student newspaper. “We also got an opportunity to meet some of the professors and actually see what the classes are like.

“I’m really happy with my choice to attend Keene State,” she added. “Academically, it has everything that I’m looking for as I start my college career.”
