Keene State College Student-Run Newspaper Takes Top Honors for News Reporting

Society of Professional Journalists Selects The Equinox Over Schools in 10 Other States

Keene State College announces that student-run newspaper, The Equinox, was selected as the winner for excellence in news reporting in a competition held by the Society of Professional Journalists, which honors the best in student journalism. Keene State’s student paper was selected as the winner of the general news reporting category in Region 1, which includes a wide range of schools throughout 10 states. Yale University and Swarthmore College took second and third places, respectively, in the same general news reporting category.

“We are thrilled that the hard work of our student journalists is being recognized. The Journalism Department at Keene State works closely with the staff of The Equinox to help them hone their craft – this award is a real coup for our department, and for The Equinox,” said assistant professor of Journalism, Dr. Marianne Salcetti. “Keene State competed against ivy league schools and major universities with 10,000 students or less, which makes this recognition even more notable.”

According to the organization, the Society of Professional Journalists promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry, works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. Professional journalists who serve as judges were required to have at least three years of experience as working journalists. The judges identified works that were outstanding, and worthy of the honor.
