College Receives 2015 Community Engagement Classification

Keene State College announces it has received the 2015 Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Keene State is the only college or university in New Hampshire to receive the 2015 classification, and one out of four higher education institutions in New Hampshire to ever be selected for the classification since it started in 2006. The college received this recognition in 2006 as well.

“Keene State College is absolutely committed to connecting with our community. Every year, our students provide the community with 75,000 volunteer hours, which is valued at $1.7 million. Whether it’s volunteering individually, helping and learning as part of a class project, participating in an internship or joining our annual Community Service Day, our students give back in tremendous ways and they gain so much in return,” said Keene State College President Dr. Anne Huot. “Keene State’s administration, faculty and staff are equally engaged. Our employees serve on boards, volunteer their expertise and time, and incorporate work in the community into academics and their everyday responsibilities. I can say confidently that Keene State exemplifies the College’s motto ‘Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve.’”

Colleges and universities with an institutional focus on community engagement were invited to apply for the classification – the application is voluntary. In order to be selected, according to the Carnegie Foundation, institutions had to demonstrate ways in which they practice community engagement that showed alignment among mission, culture, leadership, resources and practices.
