KEENE, N.H., 3/21/2011 - Keene State College’s Department of Theatre and Dance will present its 35th annual Evening of Dance Wednesday through Saturday, April 13 to16 at the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond. Eight original dances by student, faculty and guest choreographers will be performed by KSC dance students. Each evening’s performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Theatre. In celebration of the arrival of spring, An Evening of Dance offers eight new pieces that burst with the creative energy of Keene State’s vibrant dance community. Directed by KSC faculty member Marcia Murdock, the program includes an impressive showcase of student dancers, performing exciting new works that will entertain and enrich dance fans everywhere. In addition to a piece choreographed by Murdock and dance professor William Seigh, the evening will also feature six works by student choreographers, as well as a dance by acclaimed choreographer Francis Nii-Yartey, a visiting professor from Ghana.

An Evening of Dance includes Buildings(v.), choreographed by Murdock and Seigh, featuring an ensemble of 13 student performers. The piece examines architecture as form in space, as well as context for memory and experience.

The other faculty work, Chibeya, The Ancestral Connection draws on traditions of African dance to create a narrative that is rooted in authentic ritual and current practice. Chibeya is choreographed by Nii-Yartey, and features six student dancers as well as accompaniment by guest drummer Saeed Abbas.

In addition to these two pieces are six works created by student choreographers:

  • Tatter, a solo movement choreographed by Katelyn O’Leary ‘12 and danced by Sara Passios ‘11, uses movement to dramatize the pain of indecision;

  • Kindred by Richard Ouellette ‘12, features three harmonious spirits seeking inner peace;

  • Compunction choreographed and danced by Alison McRae ‘12, features a lone dancer struggling through mental and physical turmoil;

  • To Be of Three Minds by Deirdre Lewis ‘12, follows three female dancers who excise their collective insecurities through movement;

  • Florettes by Katelyn Bartelson ‘11, provides a quirky comic movement that celebrates individualism; and

  • Windward by Riley Anne Ahem ‘12, is an abstraction of the tone and form of wind.

Windward and To Be of Three Minds represented Keene State College at the New England Conference of the American College Dance Festival Association hosted by KSC in March.
