KEENE, NH 9/15/06 - Two new exhibits at the Thorne-Sagendorph Gallery showcase women artists and artistic techniques and styles. The exhibits, on loan from the Georgia Museum of Art, will run from September 22 through December 10. The Friends of the Thorne will host an opening reception on Friday, September 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Although often overshadowed by their male counterparts, women artists have played and continue to play integral roles in the development of art in America and Europe. “Prints by Women: Selected Works from the Georgia Museum of Art,” reflects how the work of women artists often parallels the increasing social freedom they experience. Various artistic movements and techniques in the field of printmaking in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are represented, from domestic scenes by Mary Cassat and Berthe Morisot to Joni Mabe’s late-twentieth-century lithograph, The Official Elvis Prayer Rug.

“Techniques and Styles: A Sampling of Paintings, Drawings, and Prints from the Georgia Museum of Art” is an educational exhibit offering audiences the opportunity to study techniques and media while learning about significant movements in Western art.

Developing an understanding of artistic techniques and styles is crucial to art appreciation. The way in which a work of art is created, and the context in which it is created, are as important as what is depicted. Examples of oil, watercolor, and gouache painting are included, in addition to ink, graphite, and printmaking methods (woodcut, etching, lithography, and screenprinting). Works date from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries and highlight artistic movements, including Impression, Cubism, German Expressionism, Surrealism, and Photo Realism.

The exhibits will be at the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery at Keene State College from September 22 through December 10, and are free and open to the public. Organized by the Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia, Athens, this exhibition is supported in part by the Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. The council is a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. Call 603-358-2720 or visit www.keene.edu/tsag for information.
