KEENE, N.H. 1/10/06 - Faculty artists will display their recent creations in the 2006 Biennial Keene State College Art Faculty Exhibition, Jan. 21-Feb. 26, at the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery. The Friends of the Thorne will host an opening reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, at the gallery.

The exhibit ranges from traditional art, such as charcoal drawings and oil and watercolor paintings, to the experimental, including vintage dolls and prints, anodized enamel, installation and computer art, and toy cars affixed with epoxy. Faculty exhibitors are: Sam Azzaro, Rosemarie Bernardi, Richard Carlson, Mary Kendra Crawford, Henry Freedman, Marsha Hewitt, Robert Kostick, Ann LaRoche, Walter Nicolai, Chris Nitsche, Yuan Pan, Christa Parravani, John Roberts, Katharina Rooney, and Craig Stockwell.

Works by Rosemarie Bernardi, associate professor of art, and Marsha Hewitt, chairperson of the Art Department, will be showcased in one gallery. Both Bernardi and Hewitt created numerous works of art during recent sabbaticals from the college classroom.

Among Hewitt’s specialties are colorful encaustics. Encaustics are paintings with beeswax as an integral element, lending dimension and texture to the piece. Her recent shows in the New England area include exhibits at the gallery at UNH, juried exhibits at the Cambridge Artist Association in Cambridge, Mass., and a one-person exhibit at the Mils Gallery in Concord, N.H. Her work is in the collection of the Chevron Corporation, Boston University, the Northrop Corporation, Software Options, and Fiduciary Trust.

Bernardi, whose photography will be displayed, says of her artistic inspiration, “I am drawn to histories: of printmaking as a medium associated with text and illustration; of old medical museums with their poignant wax models; of personal stories and psychological ideations…” Selected works by Bernardi can also be seen in permanent collections at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Fogg Museum, the Roswell Museum, and the University of Dallas.

This exhibit also includes stoneware and ceramics by Azzaro, oil paintings by Carlson, graphite and charcoal drawings and digital photography by Crawford, mixed media constructions by Freedman, oil paintings by LaRoche, steel and mixed material sculptures by Nitsche, photography by Parravani, acrylic and watercolor paintings by Roberts, and oil and charcoal paintings and drawings by Stockwell. Kostick, Nicolai, Pan, and Rooney will also show their recent work.

Free guided gallery tours are offered by Keene State art student Adrienne LaBombard at 3 p.m. on Sundays. Reservations are not required. The reception, exhibition, and tours are free and open to the public.
