Expanded Global Connections at Keene State College

Keene State College (KSC) is expanding Study Away programming - moving more fully onto the world stage with new program components in: Botswana, China, the Czech Republic, South Africa, the Southern Caribbean (Bonaire), and Sweden. With the addition of these new countries, KSC now offers Study Away programs on every continent (except Antarctica).

Each country has its own distinctive program focus. In Botswana, for example, service learning is the main thrust of the program, as it is in one of the two South Africa semester program options. The Botswana summer program is specifically engaged with community public health and includes a week in a rural health care center.

Students on the Bonaire program are focused on marine ecology; conducting research into tropical marine biology, including coral reef conservation. Charlotte McCleery is currently conducting coral reef research there and is the first KSC participant in that program.

Ethan David and Lindsay Jackson, both Film Studies majors, are in Prague studying at FAMU (the Academy of Performing Arts, Film and TV School), one of the most well-known institutes of its kind in Europe. Students wishing to study elsewhere in Prague may also pursue studies at Charles University.

In light of China’s rise to global power in the 21st century and in recognition of the new U.S. Government commitment to intensive academic experience in China, KSC is launching new study away options in that country. KSC students can now take a variety of courses about East Asia here in Keene and, if interested, may further their studies also in China. Semester and summer options are both available.

Coursework is conducted in English in all of these new program areas and countries. And of course students can also learn host country languages where program success is greatly enhanced by local language capacity. All programs are administered by CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) - a non-profit organization that has been engaged in international education for over fifty years.

Like all study away programs at KSC, financial aid can be used for international program activities and students may be able to take one upper level Integrative Studies course while abroad.
