Keene State College Advanced Printmaking Students Exhibit Work

KEENE, N.H., 12/05/06 - “Informally Known As Prints,” a weeklong exhibition of creative works by Advanced Printmaking students from Keene State College, will open on Monday, December 11, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The four-day exhibition will continue through Friday, December 15, from noon until 5 p.m. at the former location of Nieps Printing off of Ralston Street (behind Diversified Computers, 141 Winchester St.). The public is invited to see the work and meet the artists at their opening reception on Monday, December 11, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Students in Art 490: Alternative Methods in Printmaking have prepared all semester for this exhibit of their works. As part of the course, students contacted Keene community landlords about renting a commercial space, learned about the painting and grunt work involved in setting up an exhibition, designed announcements, negotiated wall space, arranged for the opening reception, and secured insurance. For three weeks they took time away from other jobs and classes to work on preparations and completing work for the exhibition. Landlord Richard Newman was interested enough to support their efforts.

The exhibition will showcase nontraditional modes of printmaking, from installation-oriented pieces to monotypes and paintings that incorporate printed elements. The 10 students participating are Alyson Bowman, David Donavon, Kathryn Earl, Molly Fletcher, Kate Griswold, Molly O’Dwyer, Anna Perkins, Juliet Ross, Emily Schiavoni, and Katie Super. Professor Rosemarie Bernardi is their instructor.

Bernardi wanted to provide senior art students with some control and professional responsibility for the display of their work. She was also excited about presenting young artists’ works to the greater Keene community. In recent years, students taking this course have exhibited at the Center of Keene and the former Amer Electric Building, now the location of the Chesire Democrats.
