Keene State Teams Advance in Postseason Play

KEENE, N.H., 11/9/06 - Two Keene State College teams advanced in their respective postseason tournaments on Wednesday night. Playing under rainy conditions at the Owl Athletic Complex, the KSC men’s soccer team sloshed its way to a 2-0 shutout win over Lasell College to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Meanwhile, at Spaulding Gym, the fourth-seed Owl women’s volleyball team defeated fifth-seed River College 3-1 to move on to the semifinal round of the ECAC tournament.

The KSC men’s soccer team (15-5-1) will travel to Williamstown, Massachusetts, on Saturday (1 p.m.) for its second-round NCAA game against Williams College (13-1-1). The Ephs, who received a first-round bye, edged Middlebury in penalty kicks (3-2) in the NESCAC championship game.

KSC and Williams College will be hooking up for the second time this season and the second straight year in NCAA play. Williams prevailed in both games. The Ephs defeated Keene State 3-1 earlier this season and 2-0 in last year’s New England regional final.

“We definitely wanted to play Williams again,” said KSC captain Eric Scott. “They beat us earlier in the year, and we want revenge.”

“Williams always seems to be in our way in the NCAA tournament,” said KSC coach Ron Butcher. “We give them a good game, but always find a way to not finish the job. Hopefully, we can turn it around on Saturday.”

Playing in the postseason for the first time in 24 years, the KSC women’s volleyball team (25-13) will face top-seed Brandeis University (20-17) in a semifinal ECAC match in Waltham, Massachusetts, on Saturday (12 p.m.). Seventh-seed Johnson & Wales (24-14) and third-seed Colby-Sawyer (20-13) will play in the second semifinal match. The two semifinal winners will meet for the championship (3 p.m.).

“This is uncharted territory for us,” said KSC women’s volleyball coach Bob Weiner. “Brandeis is going to be a tough match for us. It would really be something if we could win it all.”
