KSC Geographers Publish Rhode Island Atlas

KEENE, N.H., 11/06/06 - Klaus Bayr, professor of geography at Keene State College, and students from his cartography classes have designed and published the Rhode Island Atlas, a reference book for third- and fourth-grade schoolchildren. This full-color, 24-page book joins The New Hampshire Atlas, The Vermont Atlas, and The Electronic Atlas of New Hampshire and Vermont, all created by Bayr and his students for elementary schools.

The atlas was created to enhance a teaching unit on Rhode Island for third and fourth grades. Different maps cover topics such as basic location, physical features, culture, and historical information. Also included is a section on Rhode Island facts, a section of statistical information for counties and towns, and color photographs of various locations around the state.

Professor Bayr first enlisted the help of students from his cartography classes for these projects in 2004. Together they draw the maps using computer illustration programs. As with the other projects, the Rhode Island Atlas was reviewed by schoolchildren and a teacher, and follows state curriculum standards. The Massachusetts Atlas is scheduled for release in 2007.

Each atlas costs $7, which includes shipping and handling, and is available from the N.H. Geographic Alliance at Keene State College. Orders can be sent to Klaus Bayr, Dept. of Geography, Keene State College, 229 Main Street, Keene, NH 03435-2001. Checks should be made out to Keene State College, with “Rhode Island Atlas” in the memo line. For more information visit www.nhga.net, call 358-2507, or e-mail kbayr@keene.edu.
