Internationally Acclaimed Latin American Folk Ensemble Inti-Illimani to Appear at Keene State College

KEENE, N.H., 10/9/06 - The famous Latin American folk ensemble, Inti-Illimani, will make its area debut when it appears at Keene State College’s Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond on Wed., Oct. 25, for two performances.

The first is a special school performance at 10 a.m. and showcases not only the ensemble’s talents, but provides an entertaining lesson on 30 instruments and the styles of music they play. The evening performance is at 7:30 p.m. and is a full concert for families and the general public. Both performances are sponsored by C & S Wholesale Grocers.

The Inti’s music has intoxicated audiences around the globe. Wedded in traditional Latin American roots and played on more than 30 wind, string, and percussion instruments, their compositions are a treasure for the human spirit. Their mellifluous synthesis of instrumentals and vocals captures sacred places, carnivals, daily lives, loves, and pains that weave an extraordinary cultural mural.

Inti-Illimani’s concert will offer a retrospective covering their 40-year history. They will choose selections from their new release and most recent albums: Pequeño Mundo (its 43rd) and Lugares Comunes.

For four decades, Inti-Illimani has captivated audiences on five continents and in more than 100 North American cities. Since its inception, Inti-Illimani has promoted Latin American folk music worldwide, often in collaboration with some of the world’s most renowned artists, including Federico Fellini, John Williams, Paco Peña, Holly Near, Peter Gabriel, Mercedes Sosa, Wynton Marsalis, Sting, Youssou’n’Dour, Pete Seeger, and Bruce Springsteen.

The group has been honored with the 1990 Lion of Venice, a human rights award from UC Berkeley in 1997, and a nomination at the British Academy of Music (in the soundtrack category) for the 1982 BBC film The Flight of the Condor.

In a recent interview, founding member Jorge Coulon commented on the ensemble’s continually evolving sound: “I would even say it’s in the vanguard … that is in part because the group’s contemporary musicians enjoy an unprecedented freedom to mix musical genres in the style Inti-Illimani pioneered 40 years ago. What pleases me about this group today is that the creative risks it is taking are very much in keeping with our history while opening us to many perspectives, many possibilities.”
