Meet the Monadnock Artists

Keene, NH 9/20/2006 - The Friends of the Thorne is proud to present the “Meet the Monadnock Artists” fall lecture featuring Mary Iselin of Marlborough, N.H. The talk will be held on Tuesday evening, October 17, at 7:00 p.m. in the conference room of the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery at Keene State College. The event is free and open to the public.

Mary is a professional artist whose paintings in oil are luminous and filled with light. She often paints horses, which she sees as a bridge connecting spirit with everyday reality. Sheep and lambs, which also become her models, are chosen for the ability of their fleece to “take the light.” Her landscapes are selected for their special qualities of light, color, and atmosphere.

Her current series focuses on silver horses in various costumes, galloping under stars, through snow-filled forests, and along the ocean shore. She is also known for her paintings of more traditional equine activities, such as plowing, sugaring, and fox hunting.

Having spent nearly 30 years breeding sheep and believing in the old dictum, “Paint what you know, paint what you love,” Mary frequently uses members of her flock as models, and her sheep paintings have a become a hallmark of her work. Each spring she awaits lambing season so she can begin work on a fresh series of paintings.

Mary’s art has been featured on Rural Heritage TV, and can be found in many collections, both public and private, across North America. She has won numerous awards and exhibits both locally and nationally. Her work can be found at the Sharon Art Gallery in Peterborough, where she is also a faculty member, and in other galleries.

Please join Mary Iselin and the Friends at the Thorne Gallery conference room on October 17, 7-9 p.m. For more information call the Thorne at 358-2720. The last lecture in this fall series, on November 14, features Luanne Udell of Keene. She is a fiber artist and a member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen.
