KSC Speaker Discusses Life in Rwanda

KEENE, N.H. 6/5/06 - Beata Umugwangwali speaks on life in Rwanda and the United States on the campus of Keene State College, June 7.

Umugwangwali was working as a nurse while pursuing a master’s degree in nursing when the Rwandan Patriotic Front invaded Rwanda in 1990 and war began. Her Hutu husband, the principal of a private school; her three brothers; and many other family members were among the hundreds of thousands killed in the genocidal violence. In 1994, Umugwangwali, her three children, and three other family members escaped, eventually arriving in the Unites States in 1995.

Umugwangwali’s talk focuses on her life in urban Africa, her memories of Rwanda, and her experiences settling into life in the U.S.

William Woodward, a psychology professor at UNH who helped sponsor Umugwangwali’s immigration to this country, accompanies her.

Umugwangwali’s presentation is at 9:30 a.m. in room 102, Science Center, on the KSC campus. It is free and open to the public.
