Keene State Top Seed in ECAC Baseball Tournament

KEENE, N.H. 5/15/06 - Keene State College will be the top seed in the ECAC Division III New England tournament, it was announced on Monday. With the majority of teams in finals, the tournament, which includes three Little East Conference teams, will begin on Friday.

The Owls (31-14) will receive a first-round bye in the six-team tournament and play the winner of the fourth-seed Rhode Island College (20-19) and fifth-seed UMass-Boston (19-17) on Saturday. The game, scheduled for 3 p.m., will be played at either Owl Athletic Complex or Keene High’s Alumni Field.

Second-seed Brandeis (22-12) will also earned a first-round bye and will play the winner of the game between third-seed MIT (21-13) and sixth-seed Castleton State (22-17) on Saturday in Keene. That game will be played at either Owl Athletic Complex or Alumni Field.

The two semifinal winners will play for the championship on Saturday at Alumni Field (7 p.m.).

“It’s a great compliment to be chosen as the top seed,” said KSC associate head coach Marty Testo. “Winning a post-season tournament means a lot in terms of recruiting and making a statement that the program belongs among the top teams in the region. We’re going to go out there and give it our best shot.”

Keene State, which has already set a program record for wins in a season, will be making its third overall trip to the ECAC tournament. The Owls went to the tournament as a Division II member in 1996 and made their first-ever appearance in the Division III championship last spring. Last year, KSC defeated Curry College (10-3) before falling in the semifinals to Babson College (5-3, 11 innings).
