More than $62K Raised for Service- Learning

Keene, N.H. 5/15/2006 - From the Advancement office: A total of $62,815 has been raised on the occasion of Dr. Giles-Gee’s inauguration. When President Helen Giles-Gee chose to highlight service-learning as the focus of the inauguration fundraising, I sensed both the internal and external community would respond positively. Service-learning has been a strong element in the character of Keene State and our surrounding communities for a long time, and the value it adds is known and respected. Our students dedicate thousands of hours each year assisting area organizations, adding to the character that makes our community an exceptionally pleasant place to work and live.

Gifts to the Service-Learning Initiative will support the progress we have made in the last few years toward building a campus-wide service-learning infrastructure and enable us to expand our community partnerships and outreach efforts. It is exciting that increasing numbers of students are taking a proactive interest in community involvement and that faculty and staff are providing the foundation and inspiration to expand that interest.

Most of the fundraising conducted for service-learning was linked to the Inaugural Gala. Prospective donors were asked to be a sponsor or a patron, with the former given the option of attending the Gala. Additionally, the KSC Annual Fund appeal to campus employees and a portion of each Gala ticket purchase added to the fund total.

The funds raised will benefit campus initiatives in service-learning and community service - initiatives that help our students acquire the habits of good citizenship. The community benefits from the talented resources our students provide, creating a “win-win” atmosphere, the fertile ground for creating and sustaining solid partnerships. So it was no surprise to me that in just a few weeks we could garner this level of financial support as a collective gift to welcome our ninth College president.
