Avant Rock, Architecture as a Teaching Tool Among New Summer Offerings at Keene State

KEENE, N.H. 4/27/06 - Keene State College’s Department of Continuing Education and Extended Studies’ summer program is designed to help people graduate on time, advance career goals, and get ahead on required courses. Courses you might expect - Intro to Chemistry, Introductory Economics, Basic French Language and Culture, and General Psychology - are offered.

Debuting are new courses that are more unusual, with Architecture: Teaching by Design, Experimental Music from the Beatles to Bjork, Whitewater Kayaking, and Family Pizza and Salad Night among them.

Architecture: Teaching by Design (ESEC-595-05C), focuses on using architecture and design as themes to teach art, mathematics, social studies, science, technology, and language arts. Students learn ways to implement core curricula with the New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks through hands-on projects. Combining lectures, discussions, group projects, and walking tours to view the city of Keene’s architecture, the class is for teachers, grades 2-6. It runs July 24-28, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Avant Rock: Experimental Music from the Beatles to Bjork (MU-290-01C ST) follows avant-garde rock from its birth in the 1960s to today. Along with the Beatles, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, The Velvet Underground, and King Crimson, influences outside rock, including John Cage and Cecil Taylor, are studied. Innovative contemporary artists who push boundaries and hint at rock’s future, including Sonic Youth, Stereo Lab, Bjork, and Jim O’Rourke, are analyzed. The Monday and Wednesday course meets 6-9:30 p.m., beginning May 15 and ending June 23.

Whitewater Kayaking, June 3 and 4, teaches beginners safe, fun ways to enjoy the sport through games on the water and learning to respect the power of water by “reading” the river. Kayakers spend most of their time on moving water with small rapids learning eddy turns, peel-outs, ferries, front and side surfing, and rolling. River choice depends on local river flow. After practicing on flat water, students progress to Class I rapids for playing and Class II rapids to hone skills. The class fee of $325 includes transportation, permits, guide fees, equipment use (kayak, paddle, helmet, spray skirt, personal flotation device, wet suit, and river booties), and instruction.

Family Pizza and Salad Night is a hands-on cooking adventure for families, who make a hand-tossed pizza and several unique salads for dinner on June 23.
