Keene State College Continuing Education Announces Summer Noncredit Courses

KEENE, N.H. 3/15/06 -Keene State College’s Continuing Education and Extended Studies announces summer noncredit courses focusing on computers, professional development, and fun and relaxation.

Computer-Free Digital Photography is a hands-on class for people wanting to take better digital images. During the first class, students learn about their digital cameras, preparing to work on printing pictures directly from the memory card in the second class. Student work is used for illustrating topics. Bring your camera to the first class and be familiar with the manual. The course meets May 16 and 23, from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $100. There is a $10 materials fee.

Practical Introduction to QuickBooks is a four-hour detailed introduction to QuickBooks. Sponsored by the New Hampshire Small Business Development Center, the course covers managing money flowing in and out (sales, invoicing, paying bills, and tracking expenses), reconciling accounts, and using reports to understand a business, including profitability and sales trends. The seminar carries .3 Continuing Education Units. An NH SBDC Certificate of Completion is issued at the session’s end. Early registration is encouraged for this May 18 course running 5:30-9:30 p.m. and costing $79.

Computer Security covers perceptions and misconceptions of computer security and basic computer terminology, such as virus, trojan, worm, and phishing. Students learn techniques for protecting computers, including creating complex passwords, firewalls, on-line resources, and spyware removal tools, and how to diagnose and clean up a virus-infected Windows XP or Window 2000 computer. Prior experience with basic computer functions is helpful. The course runs May 13 and 15 from 6-9 p.m.; the cost is $100.

In Photo Restoration and Colorization Using PhotoShop, students scan photographs needing repair before repairing, restoring, and enhancing them using PhotoShop. Students should bring at least six photographs, preferably showing people, to the first class. The class runs June 16 and 17, from 5-9:30 p.m. and 8-5:30 p.m., and costs $250.

In Beyond Blame & Criticism, one of six courses focusing on professional development, students look at defensiveness and hostility and practice ways of expression to promote connection and understanding. Practice is the mainstay of the class. This course meets on Wednesdays, May 31 to June 21, 6:30-8:30 p.m. and costs $125.

Job-Search Strategies for Beginning and Midlife Career Moves is designed for people seeking an entry-level position. Professionalism in the job search, job-search strategies, Internet resources, resume and cover letter writing tips, and interview techniques are discussed. Students should bring a copy of their resume to the first class. Cost for the June 6 course running 6-9 p.m. is $50.

Exploring their perfect job in How to Get the Job of Your Dreams, students develop a plan to get there. Some pre-class preparation work, including review of education and prior jobs, is required for this June 3 class. The class runs 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and costs $100.

Focusing on conducting powerful meetings, Great Meetings covers planning, developing a strong agenda, and useful participation formats. The July 11 course runs 6-9 p.m. and costs $50.

Project Management is a practical overview of project management techniques recommended by the Project Management Institute. Picking the right project, obtaining executive and team member buy-in, confirming the project’s scope, and building a project plan leading to success are discussed. The course convenes July 18 and 27, from 6-9 p.m., and costs $250.

Environmentally Friendly Gardening is among the courses for fun and relaxation. Costing $125, the course meets Mondays, from 5:30-9:30 p.m., May 15 and 22.

Whitewater Kayaking teaches beginners how to enjoy the sport through playing games on the water, learning to respect the power of water by “reading” the river, and focusing on personal improvement. Most of the two-day class is spent on moving water with small rapids. Eddy turns, peel-outs, ferries, front and side surfing, and even rolling are taught. Students encounter flat water for practice, Class I rapids for play, and Class II rapids where time is spent honing skills. River choice depends on local river flow. Instruction, transportation, permits, guide fees, equipment use (including kayak, paddle, helmet, spray skirt, personal floatation device, wet suit, and river booties) is included in the $325 class fee. The course runs June 3 and 4, from 8-4:30 p.m.

Simplified T’ai Chi, taught in the traditional style, covers the first half of the form. Students also gain an understanding of the connection between T’ai Chi and its Taoist roots. The class gathers on Fridays, May 19 through June 23, 6-8 p.m., and costs $200.

Summertime Pasta, Magic, and Yoga are among several courses especially for families.

In Summertime Pasta, families learn how to create three Mediterranean pasta dishes in a hands-on cooking class. The July 19 class runs 6-9 p.m. The cost is $50. There is a $14 lab fee.

Beginner magic instruction for families and a magic show is the focus of Magic. The June 29 class meets from 6-8 p.m. and costs $35 per person.
