March Noncredit Courses Offered Through KSC Continuing Education

KEENE, N.H. 3/1/06 - Registration is open for noncredit courses starting in March at Keene State College offered through Continuing Education. Courses run during the evening or on weekends.

Navigating the Internet is designed for beginners to learn how to navigate and safely explore the Internet. Using search engines, favorites, protecting privacy, and downloading files safely is emphasized. Students learn advanced search techniques to find fast answers to virtually any question, practicing these skills through exercises. The course runs March 11, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The cost is $100.

Word Mail Merge for Office introduces students to features of Microsoft Word 2003’s mail merge function. Using Word and Excel as data sources, students learn how to create form letters, mailing labels, and envelopes. A working knowledge of Microsoft Word is required for this March 14 & 16 course, running 6-9 p.m. The cost is $100.

Introduction to Excel for Windows introduces Microsoft Excel for Windows. Using hands-on examples and exercises, students are introduced to features including data entry and editing technique, spreadsheet principles, formatting, and basic formulas and principles of their use. Students must have a basic familiarity with Windows or have completed the Introduction to Windows course. This course runs March 21 and 23 from 6-9 p.m. and costs $100.

Intermediate Excel, picking up from where Introduction to Excel class ended, this course teaches students how to build complex worksheets using charting and advanced formulas. Participants develop a robust skills set for Excel, including use of advanced formulas and charting tools to create and modify charts, advanced formatting and print options, advanced editing techniques, and toolbar customization. Students must have a good basic knowledge of Excel or have completed Introduction to Excel course. Intermediate Excel runs March 28 and 30 from 6-9 p.m. and costs $100.

Computer Security covers perceptions and misconceptions of computer security and basic computer terminology, such as virus, trojan, worm, and phishing. Students learn techniques for protecting computers including creating complex passwords, firewalls, on-line resources, and spyware removal tools, and how to diagnose and clean up a virus infected Windows XP or Window 2000 computer. Prior experience of basic computer functions is helpful. The course runs March 21 and 23 from 6-9 p.m.; the cost is $100.

Practical Introduction to QuickBooks is a four hour detailed introduction to QuickBooks. Sponsored by the New Hampshire Small Business Development Center, the course covers managing money flowing in and out (sales, invoicing, paying bills, and tracking expenses), reconciling accounts, and using reports to understand a business including profitability and sales trends. The seminar carries .3 Continuing Education Units. An NH SBDC Certificate of Completion is issued at the session’s end. Early registration is encouraged for this March 16 course running 5:30-9:30 p.m. and costing $79.

Psychology of Terrorism covers implications of terrorism and terrorists through readings and discussion of definitions, brief history, psychological impact, social psychological origins, and foreign policy. The course runs March 28 and 30 from 6-8 p.m. and costs $75.

Rape Aggression Defense covers the The Rape Aggression Defense System, a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course. Beginning with awareness, prevention, and risk reduction and risk avoidance, the program moves to basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a martial arts program. Keene State College’s Department of Campus Safety has eight nationally certified R.A.D. instructors. Each student receives a workbook/reference manual outlining the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth; the manual provides free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates. The course runs Wednesdays, March 22 through April 12, from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $50.
