Fall Registration Underway at Keene State College

KEENE, N.H. 7/5/05 - Registration for fall semester courses at Keene State College is now underway and continues through Wednesday, Aug. 24, for courses that run the full semester, Aug. 29 to Dec. 16. Registration for shorter term and weekend courses is open until the day the class begins. Early registration is encouraged because seats are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Some new and interesting courses and programs available this fall through Keene State’s Continuing Education Office are:

A Paraprofessional Educator Certificate program is designed for classroom assistants who want to increase their knowledge and skills in the areas of fundamentals of education, literacy instruction, mathematics instruction, classroom practice, and professionalism. Participants can earn college credits that can be used toward meeting paraprofessional educator requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act, as well as toward a college degree.

Elementary school teachers are invited to participate in a two-day, hands-on workshop for the advancement of inquiry-based mathematics and science education on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 and 15, which will launch Keene State as one of the newest GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science) sites in the U.S. This GEMS workshop will help elementary teachers learn to introduce essential standards-based principles and concepts to their students through a variety of engaging lesson plans that provide direct experience through experimentation. You can learn something new over a weekend by taking one-credit courses such as Introduction to Eastern Healing Practices (Oct. 14 & 15), The Compassionate Classroom (Oct. 28 & 29), and Puzzle People: LD/ADD Adults (Oct. 28 & 29). Each class meets on Friday from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A Safety and Emergency Management Certificate for working professionals is offered by KSC’s Continuing Education Office in cooperation with the Technology, Design and Safety Department. Designed to provide the flexibility and predictability needed by working adults, this program is delivered through a combination of web-based education and a limited number of face-to-face classroom sessions. The Safety and Emergency Management Certificate is awarded following satisfactory completion of a five course sequence of required courses and a six course concentration that provides the learner an opportunity to elect specialization in safety or emergency management.

A one-year certificate is offered in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which merges graphics with statistical databases and cartographic information to create 3-D digital maps with phenomenal detail. Two geography courses are offered this fall that can be applied to the GIS certificate: GIS: ArcView meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30-8:20 p.m. and Cartography and Computer Mapping meets Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 to 3:20 p.m.

If you are operating a small business or thinking about starting one , the Keene Region Small Business Development Center (SBDC), in cooperation with Keene State’s Continuing Education Office, may have a seminar or training class available that will fit your needs. The sessions include small business startup basics, marketing and sales, business technology, and others. Keene State offers hundreds of online courses that allow students to take classes from the comfort of home or office computers. The instructor- facilitated online courses are informative, convenient, and highly interactive. Subjects range from basic computer literacy to personal financial and wealth building. Courses start monthly and run for six weeks with tuition ranging from $79 to $89. Look for a complete online course schedule at www.ed2go.com/keene.
