Fall Registration Opens at Keene State College

KEENE, N.H. 6/24/04 - The Keene State College Continuing Education Office opens fall semester registration Tuesday, July 6, through Wednesday, Aug. 25, for courses that run the full semester, Aug. 30-Dec. 17. Registration for shorter term and weekend courses is open until the day the class begins. Early registration is encouraged because seats are filled on a first-come, first- served basis.

Some new and interesting courses available this fall are:

Architectural courses that help you build your general knowledge along with sharpening skills that can lead to careers in architectural design. There are several courses available this fall that require no previous knowledge of architecture.

Computer Aided Drafting is an introductory course on using the computer to generate visual representations of objects. The lecture and lab course meets from 1 to 2:50 p.m. Monday and Wednesday Aug. 30 to Dec. 15. After completing this course and either CAD Office Standards or Three-Dimensional AutoCAD in the spring semester a person would be prepared for an entry-level job with a design firm, construction company, or engineering concern.

Introduction to Architectural Design teaches students how to design a house and create schematic drawings to build the house for themselves or a hypothetical client. Two sections of the course are offered from 2:30 to 4:20 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, Aug. 30-Dec. 15, and from 1:30 to 3:20 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 31 to Dec. 16.

Energy and Sustainable Design focuses on single-family homes to understand how buildings use energy and how to make a structure more energy-efficient. The course meets 10 to 11:20 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 31 to Dec. 16.

Introduction to AUTOCAD for Architecture takes a building-block approach to computer aided drafting with weekly architectural projects and lab sessions. Two sections of the course are offered from 6:30 to 9:20 p.m. Monday or Wednesday, Aug. 30 to Dec. 15.

A one-year certificate is offered in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which merges graphics with statistical databases and cartographic information to create 3-D digital maps with phenomenal detail. One geography courses is offered this fall that can be applied to the GIS certificate: Cartography and Surveying is offered from 1:30 to 3:50 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 31 to Sept. 16.

The prime-time television program CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is sparking interest in forensic science throughout the country and Keene State is offering two courses this fall that meet from 5 to 9:30 Friday p.m. and from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

History of Forensic Detection, Nov. 5 and 6, focuses on the City of Keene from the 1700s to the present to examine the science of detection, ballistics, fingerprinting, crime scene investigation, police photography, DNA matching, blood typing, major crimes, post-mortem examination, and current technology.

Careers in Forensic Detection, Dec. 3 and 4, continues the exploration started in History of Forensic Detection by examining specific areas of forensic science found in labs, offices, morgues, and at crime scenes.

Figure Drawing Studio uses live models and each class begins with short gesture poses and progresses to a long pose. Students working in drawing and painting media are welcome to attend; prior figure drawing experience is recommended. The class meets from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1-Dec. 15. The course may be taken on a noncredit basis or for one college credit.

Midrange Systems Development Certificate Program is a comprehensive iSeries technology curriculum designed and developed in conjunction with the IBM Partners in Education Program. One computer science courses is offered that can be applied to this certificate: iSeries Systems Development meets from 6:30-9:20 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1-Dec. 15.
