Andrew's Inn Oral History Exhibit Opening Reception
Reception: Wednesday March 28 | 6:30-8 pm Exhibit: Monday March 19 - Friday April 13
Andrew’s Inn was a gay disco, bar, hotel, restaurant, co-counseling site, and community space on the Square in downtown Bellows Falls, Vermont from 1973-1984. Those who were involved with Andrew’s were the rural LGBTQ vanguard here in Vermont. We at Green Mountain Crossroads are honored to share the stories of this place in the words of those who were there.
The Andrew’s Inn Oral History Project emerged from a rich collaboration between Green Mountain Crossroads, Marlboro College and Vermont Performance Lab that was hatched in the spring of 2015. The show currently consists of 45 minutes of audio clips from interviews conducted in 2015, '16, and '17, present-day portraits of interviewees created by photographer Evie Lovett, archival photos from the period shot by and shared with us by Jeremy Youst, as well as archival newspaper articles about Andrew's giving more context to this history.
Part of the impetus behind this collaboration and oral history project is to address the tension between visibility and obscured existence present in the legacy of rural LGBTQ people in Vermont and throughout the U.S. They are thrilled to share this critical LGBTQ history with the broader public.
About the presenter: HB Lozito, Executive Director of Green Mountain Crossroads, has been an LGBTQ activist for over 15 years. A Senior Fellow with the Environmental Leadership Program, they are also an alum of Marlboro College Nonprofit Board Fellowship Program and Nonprofit Management Certificate Program.
