Redfern Arts Center - Alumni Recital Hall
Tuesday, · -
KSC Guitar Orchestra students perform throughout the year.

“Come Again: Toccatas, Sonatas, and Huaynos” is the theme of a concert to be offered by the Keene State Guitar Orchestra and the Keene State Latin-American Ensemble, “Cotopaxi,” at the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond, Nov. 10, 2015 at 7:30 pm. (Provide ticket information, please). Both ensembles are directed by Dr. Jose Lezcano, Professor of Music.

The eleven-member Guitar Orchestra will perform music spanning four centuries, from John Dowland’s courtly “Come Again, Sweet Love,” to modern, astringent works like Leo Brouwer’s “Toccata” or Bela Bartok’s “Allegro Barbaro.” Also on the program is Fernando Sor’s elegant Rondo in C major, a model of the early nineteenth-century classical style, and a suite of dances from George Frederic Handel’s eighteenth-century Masque, “Alceste.” Guitarists Christopher Wardlaw, Mark McCarthy, Alex Poor, and Max Kliegle will perform duet arrangements from the Anna Magdalena Bach notebook, a famous collection of short pieces from the household of J.S. Bach.

Rounding out the program are three selections performed by the KSC Latin-American Ensemble, “Cotopaxi,” named after an Ecuadorean volcano that towers over the capital city of Quito. The 28-member Latin Ensemble, using authentic folkloric Andean instruments like Sikuri (panpipes), Charangos (small Andean guitars), Bombo (drum), and Chachjas (goat-hooves rattle) will perform Ojos Azules, a Peruvian song of unrequited love; Sombrero de Paja y Quina, a sanjuanito, and a new tune composed for this concert by Dr. Lezcano in Andean style, Huasipichai, written as an étude to introduce students to the dialogue or interlocking style of panpipe performance typical of the Southern Andes. “Hausipichai” is a Quichua word that means “housewarming.” The KSC Latin Ensemble will be assisted by members of the KSC Flute Choir, coached by Prof. Robin Matathias.
