'The Tunnel' (2005) is a German thriller directed by Roland Suso Richter. Inspired by true events following the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the movie tells the story of Olympic swimmer Harry Melchior, who defects from East Germany and hatches a daring plot to help his sister and others flee East Berlin through a 145-yard underground tunnel. With the help of an engineer, Melchior leads the risky plan, under the constant threat of being discovered by the authorities. In German with English subtitles.
