Faculty Composers

The Keene State College Music Department and the Redfern Arts Center is pleased to present the twentieth annual Keene State College Faculty Composers' Recital, on Wednesday, March 31, 7:30 pm in the Alumni Recital Hall at the Redfern Arts Center. This performance will be performed with a live audience from the Keene State community in attendance and also on the Music Department's Livestream.

This annual event showcases the remarkable creativity, skills, and wide variety of compositional styles shown by Keene State music faculty artists, many of whom are active and accomplished composers in addition to their performance and teaching specializations at Keene State College. This event is offered to the campus community, members of the larger Keene community and region, and the internet audience beyond the region. The music faculty hope that attendees will come away with a deeper appreciation of diverse compositional styles and that they be moved and engaged by the music. The skills, craftsmanship, and passion demonstrated by our faculty artists is a vital resource and example in support of the Music Department’s mission, as the faculty prepare students for their future roles as educators, performers, composers, and scholars.

Participating composers include Heather Gilligan, Christopher Evatt, Rebecca Hartka, José Manuel Lezcano, Craig Sylvern, Christopher Swist , and Steve Cady , with the assistance of faculty violinists Marcia Lehninger and Paul Grobey , pianist Christina Wright-Ivanova , and baritone Matthew Leese. Some faculty composers will also perform their works and there are numerous world premieres.

Among the works to be performed are Heather Gilligan’s newly minted Rhapsody for violin and piano , in three sections featuring passages of nostalgia, rhythmic energy, and extended techniques; Craig Sylvern’s “Benjamin” for tenor saxophone and electronics, inspired by Marc Chagall’s stained glass windows in Jerusalem’s Abbel Synagogue; Rebecca Hartka’s suite for solo cello, “Four Elements,” referencing indigenous cosmology and the four cardinal points; Chris Evatt’s settings of poems by Eileen Dugan for baritone & piano; José Manuel Lezcano’s Guitar Etudes “In Time of Coronavirus,” written in tribute to the styles of various guitarist-composers and pianist Bill Evans; Chris Swist’s “Sundown through a Glass Door,” an electro-acoustic meditation incorporating synthesized and processed sounds accompanied by live violin and vibraphone, and bassist Steve Cady’s interpretations / recompositions of two jazz standards, with the collaboration of saxophonist Craig Sylvern, Chris Swist, and drummer (and KSC alumnus) George Robinson.

This event will be performed live with a KSC community audience as well as Livestream for the general public. Portions of the performance will be pre-recorded and screened to both a live and livestream audience. Ticketing will be at the door. Please bring your OWL card for admittance.
