Music from the Sole

Brazilian dancer and choreographer Leonardo Sandoval and composer/ bassist Gregory Richardson lead their company, Music From The Sole , in a special presentation of large excerpts from Partido , a piece that explores the deep connections between Afro-diasporic music and dance in Brazil and the United States, including samba, house, and, of course, tap dance. This presentation will feature a talk back session with Sandoval and Richardson, concluding a week-long virtual residency at the Redfern Arts Center at Keene State College.

This project is supported in part by the New England States Touring program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program and the six New England state arts agencies. Partido receives additional support from a New Hampshire State Council on the Arts grant, and a CARES Act grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. To find out more about how National Endowment for the Arts grants impact individuals and communities, visit www.arts.gov.

In addition to the virtual performance and post-show talk back, Music from the Sole is also presenting several virtual workshops for Keene State students that are also available for the general public to view from the Redfern Livestream link below.

Workshops:

Afro-Diasporic Connection: Workshop explores tap's connection to other Afro-diasporic dance and music forms, especially street and club forms like hip hop and house. Participants learn rhythm combos to highlight these connections.

Brazilian Rhythms: Leonardo Sandoval uses body percussion to introduce participants to some of the most common Brazilian claves (rhythmic patterns), like samba, maracatú, bossa nova, and more. Participants will learn various rhythm combos derived from these claves and build a poly-rhythmic piece.
