Webinar: Our Book Choices: Create safe spaces for students through culturally responsive teaching and the interactive read aloud

Zoom
Tuesday, · -

Description: Whenever possible, read culturally diverse books with your students! Even in a remote setting, you can use an interactive read aloud as a powerful tool to promote cultural awareness and create safe spaces for all students, while building background knowledge, vocabulary, and comprehension. We’ll review culturally responsive teaching and key concepts of awareness, learning partnerships, information processing and community building. We’ll also take a look at current trends in children’s literature, the interactive read aloud, and how to assess your classroom libraries/book choices.

Audience: Pre-K all the way through postsecondary teachers

Presenter: Jennifer Alexander, MEd, has worked in a variety of educational settings with both children and adults. At KSC, she teaches courses in the Education Department where her favorite is Literacy in Diverse Classrooms. When she isn’t teaching, she enjoys camping, kayaking, skiing, gardening, and of course, reading. Jennifer received her master's at Lesley University where she did a double dip in literacy and language, plus elementary education and creative arts in learning.
