National Institute of Standards and Technology - NIST

Science 101
Tuesday, · -

Sponsored by: Mathematics, Biology, Business Management

Keene State alum Ron Boisvert (‘73) is the Chief of the Applied & Computational Mathematics Division at NIST and will be joining us to answer the question: What is it like to work in a research lab in the Federal government? NIST is part of the US Department of Commerce and is the national metrology institute for the U.S. Its mission is to advance the science of measurement in support of both commerce and industrial innovation. This work is quite varied, from helping to define the standard SI units (e.g., the second, meter, kilogram, …) to setting Federal standards for cryptography. Ron will describe the work of NIST and provide examples of how computer scientists and mathematicians contribute to it. In doing so he will provide a glimpse of what such staff members do each day, and what background and training is needed to work there. And, along the way you’ll learn why NIST sells peanut butter, bullets, dust, and urine!

Who should come? All students, all majors and years and especially students in natural sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science. Faculty from all disciplines are welcome and urged to come.

This event is part of the Corporate Relations calendar.
